Emergency crews responded to Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood on Thursday morning for a crash involving a school bus.
The crash was reported just before 8 a.m. in the 5500 block of Bryant Street.
The front of the bus was heavily damaged after crashing into a tree and coming to a stop on the sidewalk.
“When we started swerving, everybody was, like, flying out their seats,” said Zyazia Wofford, a Schiller STEAM Academy student who was on the bus. “Everyone heard a big boom, so we thought he hit a pot hole. And then, out of nowhere, a car just starts beeping. As we were driving, we hit the tree.”
Emergency officials at the scene told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that nearly a dozen children were on board at the time of the crash. The children were evaluated by first responders and cleared.
“We got out the front of the bus. The door was barely open,” Zyazia said.
The bus driver was taken to a local hospital and reported to be stable. One child was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
