The 24th NCR Cup Junior Golf Tournament began at the Delhi Golf Club on Wednesday, featuring some of India’s top young golfers performing admirably amid challenging weather and course conditions.
Organised by the Delhi Golf Society and affiliated with the Indian Golf Union, the event has attracted a record entry of more than 160 junior golfers nationwide, according to a press release. This year, the tournament has been recognised as an official World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points event for players competing on the championship Lodhi Course, enhancing its prominence in the national junior golf calendar.
Held at the renowned Delhi Golf Club, known as one of Asia’s premier golfing venues and host to many prestigious Indian golf championships, the tournament also follows the club’s hosting of the inaugural DP World India Championship last year, which drew world-class players including Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood.
The return of the NCR Cup to this venue offers the country’s leading junior players the chance to compete on championship fairways that have challenged top global golfers, underlining the event’s significance.
In the opening round, Aditya Misra led Boys’ Category B, and Anas Khan topped Boys’ Category A with outstanding performances.
Misra recorded the day’s best score with a two-under-par 70, the only round under par across all categories. After beginning the front nine at three-over par, he recovered strongly with five birdies on the back nine to finish five under for that half, giving him a two-stroke lead over Chaitanya Pandey, who scored an even-par 72.
In Girls’ Category B, Anushka Gupta started well with a 75, leading by four strokes over Dalisha Chetry heading into the second round.
In Boys’ Category A, Anas Khan delivered the tournament’s standout moment by achieving a hole-in-one on the par-three fifth hole. He completed a round of 72 to hold a four-stroke advantage after day one. Siidhaan Chhibber is second with a 76, while Sidhak Singh Handa is close behind after a 77.
Myra Kumar led Girls’ Category A with a steady 76, holding a one-shot lead over Delhi’s Ayesha Gupta, who scored 77. Shambhavi Chaturvedi remains in contention after a 79.
The competition was further complicated by hot and humid conditions, causing approximately five players to withdraw due to heat-related issues. Despite this, the young golfers showed resilience, discipline and competitive spirit throughout the day.
Following a stroke-play cut after the second round in Categories A and B, the competition is expected to intensify on Thursday as India’s top junior golfers continue their quest for the NCR Cup titles and valuable WAGR points.
