A 38-year-old man was seriously injured this morning after suffering a shark bite off Diamond Head, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.
EMS said paramedics responded to Cromwells Beach at about 6:30 a.m. and treated the man “who suffered serious injuries to his lower extremities from what appears to be a shark bite.” He was taken to an emergency room in serious condition, EMS said.
Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards posted shark warning signs at Cromwells after a 6- to 8-foot shark was seen after the attack. Warning signs were also posted at Ala Moana Bowls after two “aggressive 8-foot sharks” were observed at the surf break, city officials said.
The Honolulu Ocean Safety Department officials said in a news release that after the shark bite “personnel conducted an assessment of the area and confirmed the presence of an aggressive shark near the swim area and surf break. Warning signs have been posted, and ocean users are strongly advised to stay out of the water in the affected area until further notice.”
Ocean Safety officials said they also posted signs “near Lifeguard Tower 1G at Magic Island after reports of two aggressive sharks, each estimated at approximately 8 feet in length, were observed near the Ala Moana Bowls surf lineup.”
A high surf advisory remains in effect for the south shore, officials said, warning that “strong currents, reduced visibility, and increased marine activity may create hazardous ocean conditions for swimmers, surfers, paddlers, and other ocean users.”
