Netflix ended May on a high note with several hit movies that debuted in the streamer’s top 10. The Crash, a stunning documentary about a tragic accident, remains the No. 1 movie on the service. For something lighter in tone, try Ladies First, a satirical comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike.
In June, Netflix will release new movies nearly every weekend, with some Fridays featuring two high-profile films. On June 5, two movies should be ready in your queue. One of them is a World Cup-themed dramedy, while the other is a rom-com featuring an international pop star and a Ted Lasso star. Check out all of these movies on Netflix in the U.S. this month.
Who’s ready for the World Cup? Admittedly, I don’t watch soccer (or “football”) religiously. However, you better believe that I’ll be dressed in red, white, and blue when the United States men’s national soccer team participates in this month’s World Cup. Until then, I’m looking for all things soccer to satisfy my urge for the tournament. Mexico 86 should help fill the gap.
In 1986, Mexico became the first country to host the World Cup more than once. In this satirical dramedy, Diego Luna plays the fictional Martín de la Torre, the man who fought tooth and nail for Mexico to host the 1986 World Cup. The ensuing chaos is a wild ride, as de la Torre leaves no stone left unturned in his pursuit of a Mexican victory off the pitch.
México 86 begins streaming on June 5.
From The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan to Second Act and Marry Me, Jennifer Lopez loves a good rom-com. For her next entry in the genre, J.Lo is teaming up with an unlikely partner: Brett Goldstein, who is best known for playing the foul-mouthed Roy Kent on Ted Lasso. The duo star in Office Romance, based on a screenplay co-written by Goldstein.
Jackie Cruz (Lopez) is the workaholic CEO of a major airline. Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein) is the airline’s new attorney. From the moment he lays eyes on her, Daniel is smitten with Jackie. As expected in a rom-com, Jackie eventually feels the same way about Daniel, and the two embark on a secret relationship. A secret workplace relationship is a tried-and-true trope. Office Romance looks charming, so fans should be in for a treat.
Office Romance premieres on June 5.
In the Voicemails for Isabelle trailer, there’s a line toward the end where one of the characters describes the situation as a “sick reboot of You’ve Got Mail.” It’s probably more like 2023’s Love Again — but the “sick reboot of You’ve Got Mail” is a better story. While You’ve Got Mail uses emails as its plot device, Voicemails for Isabelle utilizes cell phones.
Jill (Zoey Deutch) is a San Francisco-based chef grieving the loss of her sister, Isabelle (Ciara Bravo). To cope, Jill leaves voicemails on her sister’s old phone. Unbeknownst to Jill, Isabelle’s number is reassigned to Wes (Nick Robinson), an Austin real estate agent, who enjoys the messages. Wes finally goes to San Francisco and falls in love with Jill, but he doesn’t tell her about the voicemails. Any rom-com fan knows where this story is going, and that’s OK. We’re ready for a little heartbreak before the triumph.
Voicemails for Isabelle arrives June 19 on Netflix.
“Ambitious” is the word I would use to describe Julian Schnabel’s upcoming drama In the Hand of Dante. It’s essentially two movies: one taking place in the past and the other in the 21st century. Several of the A-list cast members play two characters, one from each timeline. Leading the cast is Oscar Isaac, who plays New York author Nick Tosches, who wrote the book In the Hand of Dante, which focuses on the Italian poet Dante Alighieri.
As an expert on the subject, Nick is hired by the mafia to prove the existence of Alighieri’s manuscript, The Divine Comedy, before stealing it. Isaac also plays Dante in the 14th century as he attempts to complete his magnum opus. The star-studded cast includes Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Louis Cancelmi, Sabrina Impacciatore, Benjamin Clementine, Martin Scorsese, Al Pacino, and Jason Momoa.
In the Hand of Dante streams on June 24.
Eric André’s comedy is wild and absurd. Just go watch some clips of The Eric Andre Show, and you’ll know exactly what I mean. Meanwhile, John Cena, the actor and former WWE superstar, is quickly becoming an entertaining comedy actor. Put these two forces together, and you get Little Brother.
Rudd (Cena) is a famous real estate agent whose life changes after learning about his brother’s car accident. The catch is that Marcus (André) was his “little brother” from high school, similar to when an older student mentors a younger one. Even without the genetic connection, Rudd reluctantly agrees to look after Marcus for a few days. What could go wrong? Watch the trailer, and you’ll see the insane hijinks that ensue.
Little Brother premieres on June 26.
