A 12-year-old boy from New Albany died and five additional occupants were injured Saturday after a crash on Interstate 65 near Seymour, sheriffs report.
Rick Meyers, the Jackson County sheriff, released a statement Sunday afternoon following a fatal crash on I-65 that shut the road down for over three hours Saturday night.
Sheriff deputies, along with first responders from Seymour Police Department, Indiana State Police, Seymour Fire Department, Redding Township Fire Department, Vernon Township Fire Department, Hamilton Township Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, Columbus Regional EMS, responded to reports of a multi-vehicle accident around 5:20 p.m. Saturday.
The crash took place near the 51-mile marker of I-65 Southbound, near the Seymour exit.
Officers on the scene were able to determine that one occupant involved in the crash died, three were in need of hospitalization, and two others were injured.
A Chevrolet Impala, a Mini Cooper, a semitrailer, and a pickup truck hauling a fifth-wheel camper were involved in the crash.
The deceased individual, identified as a 12-year-old from New Albany, Indiana, was in the back seat of the Impala. The three other occupants, 37-year-old Keri Bethel, of New Albany; 47-year-old Shanelle Bethel and 46-year-old Cortez Verner, both of Louisville, were life-flighted to hospitals in the area for treatment. Their condition is unknown, but sheriff department officials reported all three as “surviving occupants.”
The two occupants of the Mini Cooper — 16-year-old Ethyn Luther and 50-year-old Shannon Luther — were taken to a hospital for minor injuries and were later released.
The drivers of the semitrailer — 67-year-old Thomas Long, of Cleveland, TN — and the pickup — 52-year-old Julie Felix-Patrick, of Melbourne, FL — reported no injuries.
The cause of the crash was not released.
Indiana State Police are investigating the crash.
