Greatest World Cup shocks: Debating where Cape Verde holding Spain ranks
Checked in with various people I know who were at the Japan-Netherlands game yesterday. To a person (including me), everyone has the “Nippon” chant stuck in their heads, just as The Athletic’s Chris Vannini predicted.
I don't know about you, soccer fans, but I am still BUZZING about that historic Cape Verde result against Spain. Can you believe it? A 0-0 draw against one of the tournament favourites, to earn your first ever World Cup point.

The jovial mood at U.S. training was briefly interrupted by a collision during a warmup drill that hurt Sebastian Berhalter.
He's back up now and participating in the possession drill, but was in pain for around 30 seconds.
Jovial mood at the U.S. camp today to start training. During rondos the quality is high but laughs coming. Sergino Dest nutmegged Tim Weah. At the next break Weah asked the cameras if they recorded it. When the answer was yes, he jokingly insisted the footage must be deleted.
Dest put his arm around Weah and asked the camera crew to send him the video.

The entire USMNT squad starts its pre-training laps — except for Christian Pulisic.
A U.S. Soccer spokesperson just said that Pulisic is doing a “modified training session” and will be out on the field shortly to do individual drills separate from the rest of the team. Pulisic was subbed off at halftime against Paraguay with what has been described as a “minor” calf issue.

ARD has released the viewing figures for Germany’s 7-1 win over Curacao. The public broadcaster attracted 23.5 million, for around a 70 percent share of the audience (the game was also available on Magenta TV, which is a subscription service).
It's notable because it's a huge jump from Qatar four years ago. At that tournament, which was widely criticised by the German public on account of the host country’s human rights record, the national team’s opening game (a defeat to Japan) drew only 9 million viewers.
What is happening at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is absolutely extraordinary.
Spain and Cape Verde are in the final 10 minutes of their group-stage match. Cape Verde is trying to get its historic first World Cup point as a country in this tournament.

With Lamine Yamal making his World Cup debut today against Cape Verde, I highly recommend you read Pol Ballús feature on the 18-year-old superstar.
This excerpt shows what Yamal can be for Spain and global football if he has a productive World Cup. A reminder that Yamal began today’s match against Cape Verde on the bench.
📝: “Yamal is Spain’s irreplaceable genius, an exciting attacking threat with no equal, a player De la Fuente has built his team around — which helps explain why they are, for many, favourites to win.
“On a personal level, he has already achieved so much in these transformative past two years. If he fulfils expectations this summer, his standing will go fully stratospheric.”
