The world’s largest steam locomotive — the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 — continues its journey through New York after stopping in Buffalo on Wednesday.
The train will pass through Letchworth State Park on Thursday. The park opened at 6 a.m. to lines of cars full of steam enthusiasts eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of the famous locomotive. The Portageville gate will remain closed for the event.
The Big Boy is expected to pass through Letchworth around 12:20 p.m. and cross the Genesee River Arch Bridge. It will then make its way to the Hornell Erie Depot Museum, where it will arrive around 2 p.m. and depart at 2:30 p.m.
The Big Boy will pass through Owego and Binghamton on Friday before moving on to Pennsylvania.
The No. 4014 is one of eight of its kind that have survived to this day. It is the only one that is still operational after being restored in 2019. It weighs 1.2 million pounds and stretches more than 133 feet long.
