What does version 13.52 do?
Those still rocking a launch-day PS4 have had it for nearly 13 years, and Sony is still keeping its system software in good shape.
A new firmware update for the aged console is available now, bringing it to version 13.52.
Don’t get too excited, though; it’s not doing anything interesting or unexpected. Here’s the single official patch note:

Presumably this is a measure to help prevent PS4 from being hacked open, so it’s unlikely this will affect many people.
Still, if you’re actively using your PS4 or PS4 Pro, it’s probably a good idea to get this installed just to make sure you have the latest security updates.
Funnily enough, PS4 isn’t the only older platform that’s had updates in 2026; back in March, the PS3 was treated to a firmware update, albeit a minor one:

That's just crazy to me in all honesty life goes far too fast!
This update is more for Sony’s benefit rather than owners. That said, still got ye olde Pro and it’s still running smooth and quiet.
Keep hoping Sony will add some of those QoL features from the PS4 back into the PS5’s miserable UI but no doubt they won’t as there’s no cash in it for them.
Does it have to be a launch-day PS4, as you state, to receive the update?
"What does it do?"….Given Sony have been communicating to devs etc.,about PS4 services being turned off,more likely each firmware update likely to having it doing less, not more! Though not quite (thankfully), the broken state of the PS3 accessing it's PSN Store that I'd seen in a couple of YouTube videos!
@sanderson72 As much as one could understand some "new" or experimented features they wanted to try to promote the PS5, agreed it seemed rather strange just how little of certain PS4 features even ones that were considered popular got dropped on ps5!🤔
Seem to recall Playstation cited the pandemic for the initial slow progress on system feature additions or changes…will be a curious question if/when the PS6 is eventually unveiled just what might or might not transition from the PS5 UI?

i know ps3 gets bluray updates to play recent blurays , i'm curious if thats the same case with the ps4.
Yup, got it in my bedroom, daughter has a pro in hers. PS5 still to hit hard enough to upgrade other rooms in house.
Booted it up yesterday. Did some Chalice Dungeons in Bloodborne, I just felt like going on and on, BB is just timeless.

@TheDarts …they were using the fact that it came out 14 years ago. They’re not saying it’s only for launch day consoles.
They’re adding flavor to the article with this fact.

My launch day ps4 somehow still runs on the spare TV, but it sounds like a Harrier jump jet that's about to explode
