SEOUL – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, met with H.E. Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, during the Korea–Africa Ministerial Meeting in Seoul.
The two Ministers discussed strengthening the Somalia–Egypt strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation across areas of mutual interest. H.E. Abdisalam also expressed appreciation for Egypt’s continued support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions.
The meeting in Seoul reflects the continued momentum in Egyptian-Somali relations, which have deepened considerably over the past two years. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, has previously met with Egypt’s Ambassador to Somalia, Mohamed Salah Hassan Keshtah, at the ministry headquarters in Mogadishu, with talks centered on enhancing bilateral relations in diplomacy, regional security, education, and strategic coordination.
Somalia and Egypt have reached an agreement to enhance diplomatic cooperation against measures perceived as threatening national unity and territorial integrity, following discussions between their foreign ministers during an OIC conference in Jeddah. The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to respect international law and back diplomatic and multilateral initiatives designed to protect Somalia’s sovereignty.
Egypt has repeatedly expressed support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and has maintained close ties with Mogadishu through Arab League, African Union and bilateral diplomatic channels. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty dismissed Israel’s purported recognition of the self-proclaimed Somaliland region, characterizing it as an infringement upon Somalia’s internationally recognized boundaries, with both nations agreeing that their coordinated approach will strengthen Somalia’s standing in regional and international organizations.
The discussions are anticipated to strengthen Somalia’s diplomatic support among Muslim nations and increase opposition to any unilateral actions that could impact the nation’s territorial integrity. Somalia views Somaliland as an inseparable component of its territory, despite the region’s declaration of independence in 1991 and its lack of international recognition.
The Korea-Africa Ministerial Meeting in Seoul serves as a significant platform for African and South Korean officials to discuss trade, investment, technology transfer, sustainable development, and regional cooperation. Korea has been steadily increasing its engagement in Somalia, focusing on programs that address the root causes of conflict and violent extremism, supporting projects that expand vocational training, build entrepreneurship skills, and promote community resilience in regions most affected by instability.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has previously called for sustainable growth between South Korea and Africa while addressing leaders at the Korea-Africa Summit, highlighting the incredible progress that Somalia has made and encouraging South Korean investors to invest in Somalia in areas such as renewable energy, natural resources, and agriculture.
Somalia’s increasing role in high-level international forums demonstrates the Federal Government’s wider approach of improving the country’s global position, attracting foreign investment, and establishing partnerships that foster sustainable development and long-term stability. The strategic partnership between Somalia and Egypt continues to evolve as both sides recognize the mutual benefits of closer cooperation across diplomacy, security, economy, and regional stability.
