SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – While the results of “Toy Story 4” were mixed among fans, its box office success proved that the beloved Disney-Pixar franchise still had plenty of life left in it. Now, “Toy Story 5” arrives as the latest installment, and surprisingly, it turns out to be a very likable addition to the series.
The film reunites Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang as they face a new challenge: the growing influence of technology. Rather than focusing on children outgrowing their toys, the movie explores what happens when toys are replaced by modern devices and digital entertainment.
In many ways, “Toy Story 5” feels similar to “Toy Story 2,” revisiting familiar themes and including several callbacks to earlier films. While it may not be quite as fun or memorable as that classic sequel, it still offers plenty of entertainment. At times, the movie feels more like an extended Saturday-morning cartoon than a full theatrical feature, but that approach works in its favor.
One of the biggest changes is the shift in focus from Woody and Buzz to Jessie. A fan-favorite since her introduction in 1999, Jessie takes center stage and carries much of the film’s emotional weight. The returning cast members, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, all do solid work, although longtime fans may notice that some voices no longer sound exactly as they once did.
The movie balances its themes well, offering lessons and ideas that connect with both younger audiences and adults who grew up with the franchise. Nostalgic callbacks, familiar sound effects and a few jokes aimed at older viewers help make the experience enjoyable for parents as well.
The film’s strongest element is its exploration of whether traditional toys can survive in a world dominated by technology and how this can truly affect today’s youth. Will this generation carry the same imagination as those before them, or will they be forced to live in constant fear of being judged by others if they don’t adapt? It raises these thoughtful questions without making the topic overly heavy-handed.
Overall, “Toy Story 5” is a stronger installment than its predecessor. It delivers enough nostalgia for longtime fans while introducing new ideas that younger viewers can enjoy, and it gets from point A to point B in an entertaining ride, complete with earned laughs and payoffs. It’s a worthy return for Pixar’s iconic toy box.
