Multiple agencies searched the waters in the area of 7360 Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach after receiving reports of an individual in need of rescue.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call at approximately 11 a.m. from a beachgoer who thought they heard someone yelling for help. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said a person on the beach reported that someone in the water went underwater and did not resurface.
Naomi Gibbs, a visitor from Idaho, was next set up on the beach next to the man who called 9-1-1.
“He hopes that he’s wrong, that he didn’t see anything, but he knew that he had to call because he knew what he heard,” Gibbs said. “My heart goes out to him for being seeing something like that and just knowing that you hold a key to a part of it.”
LCSO said its marine, aviation, and ground deputies were conducting an intensive search alongside FWC and Fort Myers Beach Fire crews in the area just north of Lover’s Key State Park.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies do not have confirmation that there was actually a swimmer, and no one has been reported missing or overdue at this time.
Deputies have also cleared the scene, but LCSO said they will continue to monitor the area.
