Three years after their last live-action adventure, the Transformers are headed back to the big screen. Fresh from their merger with Skydance, and probably on the verge of another with Warner Bros, the studio is pulling one of their most successful franchises out of statis lock. While details about the new film are still being kept under wraps, we now know who’ll be writing it.
According to reports, Jason Fuchs will pen the script for the latest clash between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Fuchs has written the scripts for films like Ice Age: Continental Drift, Pan, and Argylle: he’s also one of the creators and showrunners of the HBO horror hit It: Welcome to Derry. The film is said to be the next entry in the live-action franchise; while Michael Bay is said to be producing, there’s no word if he plans to return to the director’s chair for what would be his sixth Transformers movie. There’s also no indication if this is the mooted G.I. Joe–Transformers crossover movie that was teased at the end of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts; Chris Hemsworth was reported to be starring in that film in 2024, but no further news about it has emerged.

Based on the long-running series of toys, cartoons, and comic books first released by Hasbro in 1984, the films center around the centuries-spanning civil war between two factions of living robots from the planet Cybertron: the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), and the nefarious Decepticons, ruled by Megatron (Hugo Weaving, and later Frank Welker). In the first three films (Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, and Dark of the Moon), the Autobots ally themselves with the US military and human teenager Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf); following the events of the third film, when Chicago is largely destroyed in a pitched battle, the Autobots find themselves fugitives, and ally themselves with inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) for the fourth and fifth films (Age of Extinction and The Last Knight). The sixth movie in the franchise, Bumblebee, went back to the 1980s, and partnered the titular Autobot with teenager Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld); the seventh, Rise of the Beasts, was another prequel, and incorporated the mythos of the 1990s series Beast Wars.
The Transformers’ most recent big-screen outing was Transformers One, an animated prequel that revealed the origin of the conflict between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Despite strong reviews, the film disappointed at the box office.
A new Transformers movie is in the works, with Jason Fuchs writing the script; no release date has yet been announced. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
