The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the person who died as Darryel Sutton, 22, of New Orleans. The coroner said Sutton suffered sharp force injuries during an assault, and his death is being investigated as a homicide.
The stabbing happened around 1:13 p.m. while the bus was parked at the Walmart on Academy Drive during a scheduled lunch and snack break, according to Bessemer police.
Investigators said the bus was carrying event security workers who were returning to New Orleans after working a festival in Manchester, Tennessee. The bus was scheduled to leave at 1:20 p.m.
Sutton had just re-entered the bus and was in the rear section when the stabbing happened. The suspect was already on board
Police said the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute involving a female coworker. According to investigators, the suspect was interested in the woman, but those feelings were not returned. Police said tensions between the individuals involved had been building for several hours and possibly days before the attack.
