The southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Kerala, bringing widespread rainfall across several parts of the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain has been reported in many regions since Wednesday night, marking the official onset of the monsoon over the Indian mainland.

With the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala, attention has now shifted to when northern parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh, will get relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions. The IMD has indicated that temperatures are likely to ease in several regions over the next two to four days as weather conditions become more favorable.

The weather department said the southwest monsoon is expected to advance further along the Karnataka coast and reach up to the Goa latitude within the next three to four days.

Meteorologists noted that atmospheric conditions currently remain favorable for the monsoon’s progress. However, IMD scientists have projected that the advancement of the monsoon may slow down after June 10.

Ahead of the official monsoon onset, the IMD issued an Orange Alert on Thursday morning for three Kerala districts—Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam. The alert will remain in effect for three hours, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in parts of the state.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as intense rain activity is expected to continue in the coming days.
