Strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR on Saturday. According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of these tremors lies in Afghanistan, as the country witnessed a 6.2 earthquake.
According to reports, the earthquake was felt in the Hindu Kush region, about 81 kilometers from Kalafgan. It struck at 7:05 PM local time and measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.
These tremors were felt in several countries, such as Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan.
Tremors felt in India
In India, other than the Delhi-NCR tremors were also felt in Jammu and Kashmir as the areas are considered seismically sensitive. The state often experiences mild to moderate earthquakes from time to time.
Imtiaz Ahmad, a resident of Srinagar, said that he was sitting on a chair outside his house when the earthquake struck. He noticed that both the chair and the overhead power lines started shaking.
Earthquakes measuring above 6.5 magnitude are more likely to cause damage
The strongest tremors are felt near the earthquake’s epicenter. As the distance from the epicenter increases, the intensity of the shaking gradually decreases.
In general, earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.5 or higher are more likely to cause significant damage to life and property. Earthquakes measuring 6.0 or below usually have a relatively limited impact on people and normal day-to-day life.
