India will resume issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens from June 28, ending a nearly two-year suspension and signaling a significant step toward normalizing relations between the two South Asian neighbors after a period of strained ties, News.Az reports, citing Anadolu.
India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, announced the decision during a press conference in Dhaka on Thursday. He said tourist visa services for Bangladeshi travelers would restart on Saturday.
New Delhi suspended tourist visas following the political turmoil in Bangladesh in July 2024 that led to the removal of the Awami League government.

During the subsequent 17-month period under an interim administration, India continued issuing only limited categories of visas, including those for medical treatment.
Since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office earlier this year, both countries have worked to improve relations through renewed diplomatic engagement, high-level exchanges, and the gradual restoration of visa services.
Despite these efforts, relations have continued to face challenges due to recurring tensions along the nearly 4,000-kilometer (2,485-mile) border shared by the two countries.
Bangladesh has repeatedly objected to what it describes as the forced return of its citizens by India’s Border Security Force (BSF), arguing that such actions violate established repatriation procedures and place additional strain on bilateral ties.
Dhaka also resumed issuing all categories of visas to Indian citizens in February after temporarily suspending services at its diplomatic missions in India following attacks on Bangladeshi diplomatic facilities.
The resumption of tourist visas completes the restoration of all major visa categories between the neighboring countries and is expected to help revive one of the busiest cross-border travel routes in the world.
