Held at the National India Hub in Schaumburg under the global theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” the celebration highlighted yoga’s timeless message of physical wellness, mental balance, emotional resilience, and spiritual harmony.
Nearly 500 participants enthusiastically joined the event, beginning the session with the sacred chanting of “Om” before practicing a series of yoga postures and breathing exercises designed to promote overall wellness.
The Consul General of India in Chicago, Somnath Ghosh addressed the gathering and emphasized yoga’s growing role as a universal force for unity and well-being.
“Yoga belongs to all humanity,” he noted. “It is a pathway to connect with ourselves, our communities, and nature. The tremendous enthusiasm witnessed today reflects yoga’s universal appeal and its power to bring people together across cultures and generations.”
The Consul General praised National India Hub and its leadership for making the venue available at short notice after weather conditions made an outdoor celebration impractical. He also thanked sponsors, volunteers, and community organizations for their invaluable support in making the event a success.
The celebration featured complimentary yoga mats, commemorative T-shirts, refreshments, guided yoga instruction, and participation certificates. The atmosphere was warm, inclusive, and inspiring, with people of all ages participating side by side in the spirit of health and harmony.
The Chicago-area observance formed part of a much larger regional celebration of International Yoga Day that has continued to grow in scope and impact since Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the observance at the United Nations in 2014. Today, International Yoga Day is celebrated worldwide, demonstrating the enduring relevance of India’s ancient gift to humanity.
Earlier in the week, Chicagoland witnessed what many described as its largest-ever International Yoga Day celebration, June 14, 2026, at the Naperville Yard Sports Complex where thousands gathered to celebrate yoga. The event was organized by Mindful Meditation Yoga under the leadership of Anu Malhotra.
Participants from diverse backgrounds joined in guided yoga sessions, cultural presentations, meditation practices, and wellness activities, showing the growing popularity of yoga in the Midwest.
From children learning their first yoga postures to seniors embracing yoga as a path toward healthy ageing, the events highlighted the universal benefits of the practice and its ability to enrich lives at every stage.
