A brushfire of more than 100 acres on the Treasure Coast was contained Sunday night.
The Florida Forest Service and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office announced that a fire southwest of Newfield Parkway and Citrus Boulevard was extinguished.
Stuart Fire Rescue said its crews also assisted.
“The Florida Forest Service will monitor the area overnight and into tomorrow,” a spokesperson for Martin County Fire Rescue posted to Facebook on Sunday night. “The fire burned a total of 115 acres and early reports indicate that lightning caused it to start. Residents should still be cautious and aware of smoky conditions in the area.”
Florida Forest Service Okeechobee District Wildfire Mitigation Specialist David Grubich initially said on Sunday afternoon the Forest Service conducted suppression efforts on a 10-acre wildfire southwest of Newfield Parkway in Martin County.
The fire grew rapidly over the next couple of hours.

As of 6:12 p.m., the Florida Forest Service wildfire database noted the fire grew up to 114 acres and was 100% contained.
At 6:38 p.m., the Forest Service revised the size of the fire to 105.2 acres.
“They provided water via helicopter drops,” MCFR District Chief Tom Hornbostel told WPBF’s Rachel Williams. “Both those entities working together were a huge accomplishment for us today. We were able to get a quick knockdown on this fire.”
Grubich said as of Sunday afternoon, no evacuations or structures were threatened.
Hornbostel said this time of the year, the weather plays a role in producing outdoor fires.
“Summertime is a critical time for us, especially with the afternoon thunderstorms,” he said. “If we have a lack of rain for a while, some high winds, dry vegetation, it’s really all like a perfect formula for a brushfire.”
