The complaint, filed in federal court in California, accuses Midjourney of enabling users to generate images that closely resemble well-known characters from major film and television franchises, including Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars properties as well as Universal’s animated characters. The studios claim the AI company’s system was trained using copyrighted material without authorization and continues to facilitate the creation of infringing content.
According to Toy People, the lawsuit marks one of the most significant legal actions brought by major Hollywood studios against a generative AI company. The plaintiffs argue that Midjourney’s image-generation technology can produce recognizable depictions of protected characters, potentially undermining the value of intellectual property rights held by content creators.

Beyond the copyright allegations, the case is also drawing attention from legal observers because of its potential implications for competition and antitrust issues within the rapidly growing AI sector. Large media companies have increasingly voiced concerns that AI developers may be building commercial products using copyrighted content without licensing agreements, allowing technology firms to compete in creative markets while avoiding costs traditionally associated with content production.
The lawsuit seeks damages as well as court orders that would prevent Midjourney from continuing to generate allegedly infringing images. Disney and Universal contend that the platform has failed to implement adequate safeguards despite being aware of repeated claims that users could create images resembling protected characters.
Midjourney has not been found liable for any wrongdoing, and the allegations remain subject to judicial review. The case is expected to become a closely watched legal battle as courts continue to address how existing copyright laws apply to generative artificial intelligence technologies.
