The fire is burning in grass and piñon-juniper fuels, and its cause is under investigation. The affected area is privately owned.
Shelter can be located at the Multi-Purpose building located at 106 N Sunset.
Livestock shelter is available at the Mountainair Rodeo Grounds.
Current wind conditions are pushing smoke from the Deer Canyon fire toward Mountainair and surrounding areas, which may result in reduced air quality and increased smoke throughout town.
Residents who use oxygen, have asthma, COPD, allergies, or other respiratory conditions, as well as young children and older adults, are encouraged to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and limit outdoor activity. If you experience difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, or other serious symptoms, seek medical attention.
