DC Studios is moving forward with a movie centered on two of Batman’s most dangerous villains, but the news has already created mixed reactions among fans.
According to The Wrap, Captain America: Brave New World writer Matthew Orton has been hired to write the upcoming Bane and Deathstroke movie for DC Studios. The project is still in early development, and no director or cast members have been officially announced yet. However, the latest update has confirmed that the villain-focused movie is still happening after first being reported in 2024.
While many fans are excited to finally see two major DC villains share the big screen, others are worried about the choice of writer because of the disappointing response to Brave New World.
Captain America: Brave New World was released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and received mixed-to-negative reactions from critics and audiences. The film currently holds a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics pointing to problems with its story, pacing, and heavy focus on connecting to other Marvel projects. Audience reactions were also weaker than expected, with CinemaScore giving the movie a “B–,” the lowest audience grade ever recorded for an MCU film.
Because of that, some DC fans are questioning whether Orton is the right person to handle a movie featuring two of the company’s biggest villains.
The concern comes at a difficult time for superhero movies, as audiences have become more selective after years of comic book releases dominating theaters. Fans are hoping DC Studios can avoid the mistakes that hurt some recent Marvel projects and deliver something darker and more focused.
The Bane and Deathstroke movie has the potential to stand out because both characters have strong histories in DC comics. Deathstroke, also known as Slade Wilson, was created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez in 1980. Originally introduced as a villain for Teen Titans, the character became one of DC’s most popular assassins. He has appeared in shows like Arrow and Titans, as well as films connected to the DC universe.
Bane, meanwhile, became famous after his debut in 1993’s Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1. The character is best known for defeating Batman in the comics and physically breaking the hero’s back. He was previously played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises.
The upcoming movie could give both villains the spotlight they have never fully received in live-action. Earlier reports also suggested that Greg Mottola, known for directing episodes of Peacemaker, is among the directors being considered for the project.
However, fans are watching closely because DC Studios is currently trying to build a new shared universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Every project carries extra pressure after the studio’s previous attempts struggled to create the same success as Marvel.
The hiring of Orton does not automatically mean the film will fail, but some fans are concerned that Brave New World’s reception could be a warning sign. Many are hoping DC uses the Bane and Deathstroke movie as a chance to create a more mature, violent, and character-driven story.
For now, the project remains in development, and fans will have to wait to see if DC’s most brutal villains can finally get the movie they deserve.
