This week in streaming is all about prequels, sequels, a sequel to a prequel and an original movie about crazy rich people.
In other words, it’s a great time to watch new streaming shows and movies on Netflix, Peacock, Prime Video and Disney+.
Peacock’s original thriller Strung is already streaming, so you can enjoy all the twists and turns lead star Chloe Bailey endures as a stressed-out cellist working for an unhinged wealthy family.
July 1 is the launch date for the rest of Watch With Us’ weekly recommendations, with Prime Video dropping all eight episodes of its Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle.
Disney+ is debuting the first three episodes of X-Men ‘97 season 2, while Netflix is saying goodbye to one of its best characters in Enola Holmes 3, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter.
Laila (Chloe Bailey) is a talented violinist who needs money to pay the bills. Audra (Lynn Whitfield) is a wealthy socialite who needs someone to tutor her granddaughter, Zuri (Romy Woods). That’s why Laila accepts Audra’s offer to teach Zuri at her gorgeous mansion, where Zuri’s mom, Imani (Anna Diop) and estranged father, Marcus (Emily in Paris’ Lucien Laviscount), live. But Zuri is an odd child, and Imani is openly hostile to Laila. Does she know Laila is attracted to Marcus and vice versa? Or is there something more sinister going on?
Strung is best described as a Tyler Perry movie with a Blumhouse horror-thriller plot, so that should give you some idea of what to expect. Slickly directed by Malcolm D. Lee, the film has one absurd plot twist after another, but it’s all in good fun. “Rich people doing crazy things” is one of my favorite subgenres, and Strung doesn’t disappoint in that area.
Just six months after Stranger Things ended its five-season run, Netflix is wrapping up another past-its-prime Millie Bobby Brown franchise with Enola Holmes 3. The third and final entry in the crime-solving film series sees Enola tackle her biggest mystery yet – marriage.
Enola (Bobby Brown) is about to walk down the aisle with her longtime love, Twekesbury (Louis Partridge), but she’s unsure if they are doing the right thing. These wedding day jitters are cast aside when an actual mystery arises: her older brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill) has been kidnapped, and she needs to find him before it’s too late. Who kidnapped the world’s best detective? And can the world’s second-best detective crack the case while also marrying the love of her life?
25 years after she was first introduced in the 2001 surprise hit film Legally Blonde, Elle Woods is back – only this time, she’s younger, stuck in the 1990s and the star of an eight-episode streaming show, Elle. Oh, and Reese Witherspoon isn’t playing her – she handed her pink baton to newcomer Lexi Minetree, who portrays Elle in her teen years before she attended Harvard and charmed Washington D.C.
When her plastic surgeon father botches a nose job at his Beverly Hills practice, Elle and her family are forced to move to Seattle, which, in the ‘90s, was in its grunge era. Surrounded by a sea of plaid, the pink-loving Elle has to make friends at a high school that loathes anyone with a sunny disposition. But Elle is determined to win everybody over, even if she has to makeover anyone who gets in her way.

Superhero fatigue is real – just ask James Gunn, who is already in deep brown stuff after Supergirl put a damper on his revamped DCU. To be successful, comic book content has to stand out and, you know, actually be good, which is why X-Men ‘97 captured everyone’s attention when it was released two years ago. The animated series honored its predecessor, the influential 1990s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series, while inviting new viewers into the exciting and dangerous world of Marvel’s merry mutants.
X-Men ‘97 is back for season 2, and it promises to be even more lore-heavy, with characters and storylines taken directly from the comic books. Apocalypse (Ross Marquand) is the main baddie this time around, and the team, separated by space and time, will have to band together to stop him from taking over the world. The first three episodes drop on July 1, with a new episode premiering every Wednesday until August 12.
