The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deputy killed in Friday night’s shooting.
The sheriff’s office said Deputy Logan Utt was killed in the line of duty. He joined the agency in 2023 after serving in the military.
Utt was a husband and father. The Mount Airy Rescue Squad said Deputy Utt also served as a firefighter with the Mount Airy Fire Department. We have reached out to the department for more information about when he served.
The sheriff’s office said Utt and another deputy were called to a home on Fancy Gap Highway around 9:30 p.m. Friday for a welfare check.
When they arrived, they made contact with the suspect, identified as Michael Puckett. Authorities said Puckett opened fire, shooting both deputies and killing Utt. There is no word on the other deputy’s condition.
The sheriff’s office said Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. The Mount Airy Police Department is assisting in the search for Puckett. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. He is considered armed and dangerous.
