US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the conflict with Iran had come to an end, following his earlier assertion that Washington and Tehran had agreed to a “very strong memorandum of understanding” aimed at halting hostilities.

Speaking during a tele-rally in support of Georgia lieutenant governor Burt Jones, who is contesting the state’s gubernatorial election, Trump declared, “I don’t know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today.”

He added, “They have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon, something that we insisted on; that was the whole purpose. That was 95 percent of it.”
Trump’s remarks came hours after he called off additional military strikes against Iran and indicated on his Truth Social platform that an agreement had been reached, although he did not disclose specific details of the arrangement.
Explosions reported off the coast of Sirik in southern Iran were linked to an encounter between Iranian naval forces and a vessel attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB.

Quoting a military source, the broadcaster said the ship had allegedly violated transit restrictions and was intercepted by Iranian forces. The source added that the vessel was an oil tanker that complied with the transit ban after receiving warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Thursday evening, hours after Trump claimed on social media that Israel was backing a potential agreement with Iran.

The call came after the US president suggested that Israel supported an impending deal with Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to secure an agreement appeared to gather momentum.
Iran is likely to approve a proposed memorandum of understanding with the United States after Washington accepted Tehran’s draft text, according to a report by the IRGC-linked Fars News Agency.

The report, citing sources familiar with the negotiations, said the chances of the agreement being approved are high. However, it added that Tehran has not yet delivered its final response and no formal decision has been announced.
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he believed Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had given his approval to a proposed agreement with Washington that could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the US blockade on Iranian ports.

Responding to a question from a reporter at the White House about whether Khamenei had endorsed the deal, Trump replied, “I understand the answer is yes.”
