CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for the suspect in the shooting of two deputies, one of whom died.
Deputy Logan Utt was a military veteran who joined the department in 2023. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting along Fancy Gap Highway.
The US Marshal’s Service is offering a $10 thousand reward for information leading to Michael Puckett; the number to call is 540-444-7788.
Resources from the FBI, US Marshals, ATF and multiple local agencies continue to assist Carroll County, according to Virginia State Police, who are also heavily involved in the investigation.
Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a welfare check at Puckett’s home on Fancy Gap Highway Friday about 9:30 p.m. When they arrived and made contact, investigators say, Puckett opened fire, shooting both deputies, killing Utt and injuring the second. He then ran off.
We are asking the public to check surveillance video or trail/hunting camera images to assist in real-time tracking of the fugitive. We also ask home and business owners to lock your vehicles, close your garage doors, lock up your sheds and do not leave anything outside Puckett could use to assist him to elude capture. Call 911 if you see Puckett.
Puckett should be considered “armed and extremely dangerous”, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.
