Don’t look now, but the Philadelphia Phillies are suddenly playing like the postseason contender most expected them to be this year as they enter a playoff-caliber matchup with the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
The Phillies were one of MLB’s worst teams in April, losing 16 of 18 games at one point and firing manager Rob Thomson along the way. Interim skipper Don Mattingly has righted the ship, though. The Phils’ pitching staff has been outstanding lately, allowing seven total runs in their last six games, while their offense has gradually started to figure things out.

The Phillies just did the Dodgers a favor by sweeping the Padres in San Diego, capped by another scoreless outing from Cristopher Sanchez. Even better for L.A., that means the untouchable lefty won’t be pitching at Dodger Stadium this weekend, but solving Zack Wheeler (4-0, 1.67 ERA) will be a tough enough task Friday.
The Dodgers are in their usual spot atop the NL West and have won 12 of 14. They’ll send Justin Wrobleski (6-2, 3.07 ERA) to the mound for the series opener and hope to keep it rolling as they come off a sweep of the Rockies.
