Police are now looking for two suspects after a man in his 30s with no criminal record was shot dead in broad daylight at his place of work in Surrey on Monday afternoon (May 4).
Surrey Police has confirmed that at about 3:03 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to calls of a shooting at a business in the 13000-block of 76 Avenue and found a man apparently suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officers provided medical assistance until BCEHS arrived but, despite life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead on scene.
The shooting happened in a business on the second floor of an office complex at 13049 76 Ave., where Surrey Police and IHIT (Integrated Homicide Investigation Team) officers remained on scene Monday afternoon.
The victim was “not previously the target of any reported threats or extortion,” in Canada, Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said at a news conference Tuesday (May 5).
Police are working with his family and friends to establish a timeline leading up to the shooting and to gather background information on the victim.
Investigators believe that it was a targeted shooting that was “limited to a business on the second floor.”
Fong said investigators are aware of people online claiming responsibility for the shooting, but urged caution.
“Often with these cases, different people make claims and take responsibility, but we must assess what is viable and what is legitimate, and that is part of all of our investigations,” she said.
Fong said she understands that some in the community are afraid.
“But what’s important is that, based on the MO of this event, it has the hallmarks of a targeted shooting, and that it didn’t happen at random,” she said. “We don’t believe there’s a shooter out there that’s randomly targeting people at a busy place.”
No arrests have been made. Fong said there were two people involved in the shooting whom police are now looking for, but did not provide any further information about them.
“This was a brazen shooting that showed a complete disregard for public safety, and it is fortunate that no one else was injured,” she said. “Investigators are actively pursuing a number of priority tasks to identify those involved.”
Police are not releasing the victim’s name or immigration status at this time due to privacy concerns and because family notifications are still ongoing.
“Part of the decision whether or not we identify the victim has to do with whether or not it will further the investigation,” Fong said. “Upon further investigation, that might change and there may be the need to identify the victim, but at this time, we are working diligently to determine the victim’s background as well as a timeline leading up to the shooting, so that is our priority right now.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
The shooting marks Surrey’s ninth homicide of the year.
