MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has received a shipment of modern equipment from Turkey’s Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), intended to improve the ministry’s operational capacity and advance agricultural development.
Agriculture Minister Mohamed A. Hayir Maareeye formally accepted the items during the handover, calling the assistance a significant step toward modernizing the ministry and improving its services. The minister has previously launched initiatives to equip local farmers with vital tools and machinery in collaboration with international partners.
The ministry said the equipment will boost institutional efficiency and help carry out agricultural development initiatives aimed at raising productivity and strengthening food security. This push to modernize the ministry aligns with broader efforts, including the European Union’s renewed commitment to supporting the country’s agricultural transformation, which focuses on land and water management reforms and modernizing farming practices.
The handover is part of a series of agricultural interventions by the Turkish agency in Somalia. In previous projects, TİKA installed greenhouses at Mogadishu University and the Mogadishu Central Prison, providing agricultural equipment, fertilizers, and machinery to enable more efficient farming. The agency has also supported beekeeping initiatives, donating hundreds of beehives to farmers in Somaliland.
Somalia regards agriculture as a central pillar of its economic recovery and development plans. The sector supports a large share of the population and is vital to rural livelihoods, even as climate change, repeated droughts and weak infrastructure pose major challenges. The government has previously sought to strengthen agricultural development cooperation with Turkey, with high-level meetings focused on technology exchange and capacity building.
Officials said the donation will help Somalia move closer to greater food self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imported food. The Ministry of Agriculture has also engaged with other international partners, including the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization, to build resilient food systems and provide emergency assistance to farmers affected by climate shocks.
The handover also reflects deepening cooperation between Somalia and Turkey, which has become one of the country’s leading development partners over the past decade through projects in infrastructure, education, health, security and humanitarian aid. Somalia and Turkey recently marked 60 years of diplomatic ties, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation in critical sectors.
The Ministry of Agriculture expressed gratitude to the Government of Turkey and TİKA for their ongoing support, describing the partnership as a meaningful contribution to Somalia’s long-term development.
