EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — President Trump said Tuesday he would read aloud the text of his still-secret Iran deal once it is released — as administration officials tried to defend the pact from skeptics who fear it won’t do enough to restrain Tehran.
“I will not only release it, I will probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word so that the press covers it accurately,” Trump said during a meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
“I will go over the document with the media in a couple of days,” said Trump, who is scheduled to hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon before dining with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris.
“I would like to get a formal signing first before we do that, but I have no problem with that.”
Trump and Vice President JD Vance affixed their electronic signatures to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Sunday — ahead of a formal ceremony Friday featuring Vance and an Iranian delegation in Switzerland.
It remains unclear exactly when the document will be released.
Trump said Monday that he planned to release the text “sometime after Friday” — longer than a 24-48-hour window cited by a different US official earlier this week.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — who launched the war on Feb. 28 alongside Trump — says he hasn’t received a copy of the MOU, nor have senior congressional leaders who may ultimately decide whether to ratify the agreement.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told reporters Tuesday morning: “Well, we’ll get briefed when there’s text available, I assume.”
Both sides have publicly confirmed some details, including the toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days, during which there will be more discussion of how to down-blend Iran’s highly enriched uranium.
US officials have described a $300 billion Gulf Arab-funded infrastructure investment initiative as well as plans for sanctions relief for Iran, tied to objective benchmarks to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear program and cease aid to regional terror proxies.
Trump said Tuesday he was confident that the final points would be resolved within the next two months.
“I don’t know, it is a 60-day period or so. I think it is going to happen fairly on time,” he said.
“We have both been involved. Iran wants to get it done. They want to get back to business. Their relationship is now normalized, so I think it is going to go quickly.”
