DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday (February 27, 2025) charged that the push for a monolithic Hindi identity “killed ancient mother tongues.” Languages that gave space for Hindi eventually got lost without any trace, he claimed. In a social media post, Mr. Stalin called upon “sisters and brothers from other States” and asked if they were aware as to how many Indian languages Hindi has “swallowed”. He went on to answer the question saying Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khortha, Kurmali, Kurukh, Mundari and many more were now “gasping for survival”.
Two-time Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday, along with their dog. Hackman was 95, and Arakawa was 63. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed their deaths early Thursday to the Santa Fe New Mexican, stating there were no immediate signs of foul play. The exact cause and time of death have not been disclosed.
Supreme Court says critics of Bhopal toxic waste disposal adopting ‘not-in-my-backyard’ principle, refuses to intervene
The Supreme Court on Thursday (February 27, 2025) remarked the petitioners opposed to the transportation and disposal of 337 metric tons of Bhopal gas tragedy toxic waste at a Pithampur facility in Madhya Pradesh are indulging in the ‘NIMBY’ (not in my backyard) principle. A Bench headed by Justice BR Gavai rejected the pleas made by the local populace of Pithampur and civil rights organisations to intervene in a Madhya Pradesh High Court order on December 3 to shift and destroy the hazardous waste which had been lying buried in and about the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) plant site for nearly 40 years after a methyl isocyanate gas leak claimed over 5400 lives in one of the biggest industrial disasters in history.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (February 27, 2025) said that the just concluded Mahakumbh at Prayagraj demonstrated what a newly awakened national consciousness looked like after it had broken free of a mindset of slavery. Penning a blog posted on his App, the NaMo App, and other social media sites, he said that, “the Maha Kumbh has concluded. The ‘mahayagna’ of unity has concluded. When the consciousness of a nation awakens, when it breaks all the shackles of hundreds of years of slavery to breathe with a new consciousness, then such a sight presents itself that we witnessed in the Maha Kumbh of unity in Prayagraj after January 13,” he said.
Rescue operation to trace the eight persons missing after a portion of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapsed last week hinges on the recommendations of the high-level team of Border Roads Organisation to completely dewater and start de-silting operations simultaneously. Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy revealed that the rescue operation at the SLBC tunnel in Domalpenta of Nagarkurnool district, would be intensified at full stroke to locate the eight missing workers. The Minister expressed confidence that the operation would be completed within two days. Mr. Reddy also said that alternate access routes to reach the tunnel boring machine (TBM), which was stuck in the muck are also being explored to mitigate risk and improve the speed of the rescue mission.
The authorities on Thursday (February 27, 2025) denied permission to Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to lead the funeral prayers of his father-in-law at historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar. “The authorities sealed the gates of Jama Masjid Srinagar and cordoned its surroundings and informed that the Namaz-e-Jinazah (funeral prayers) of Dr. Ghulam Sibtain Masoodi, father-in-law of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, will not be allowed,” a spokesman of the mosque said.

Neelam Shinde from Maharashtra’s Satara was critically injured in the accident on February 14 and has been in a coma at a hospital since then. Ms. Shinde reportedly suffered severe injuries to her head, hand and chest. Her family has sought an urgent visa to travel to the U.S. to be by her side.

The Punjab Government on Wednesday (February 26, 2025) said it has made Punjabi a mandatory subject in all schools across the State, regardless of their educational board affiliation, and asserted that education certificates will be considered null and void without Punjabi as a main subject. The move came after the AAP Government accused the BJP-led Centre and the CBSE of dropping Punjabi from the list of subjects for Class 10 in the new draft norms for biannual board exam format and dubbed it as a “well-planned conspiracy” against Punjab and Punjabi.
In a significant verdict, the Supreme Court on Thursday (February 27, 2025) held that the provision of anticipatory bail is applicable to the Goods and Services Act and customs law and persons can move courts for pre-arrest bail even if an FIR is not in place. A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices MM Sundresh and Bela M Trivedi had reserved the verdict on May 16, last year on a batch of pleas challenging the penal provisions in the Customs Act, the GST Act as being non compatible with the Code of Criminal Procedure CrPC and the Constitution.

Influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate have left Romania for the U.S. after a travel ban on them was lifted, an official said Thursday (February 27, 2025). The brothers are charged with human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. It is not clear under what conditions the Tates — who are keen supporters of President Donald Trump and boast millions of online followers — were allowed to leave Romania.
