“Schmigadoon!” was the big winner at this year’s Tony Awards.
Produced by “Saturday Night Live” head Lorne Michaels, the Broadway comedy danced off with four trophies at the June 7 ceremony including best musical, best score, best book and best orchestrations. Speaking to journalists across the street from Radio City Music Hall, Michaels said he believes the show has offered a “really satisfying” escape for both audiences and awards voters alike.
“Schmigadoon!” parodies classic shows such as “Oklahoma!”, “The Music Man” and “Carousel” to tell a new story about love and acceptance.
“It’s using those musicals, and the optimism and patriotism of them,” Michaels said. “Schmigadoon!” revisits Golden Age musicals through a modern lens, reminding audiences: “Yeah, there were things that were wrong, but also it was America and things got better.”
