HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican, is dismissing the Iran war’s potential economic impacts on the midterm elections.
The conflict, which has entered its fourth month, is increasing inflation and raising gas prices, which are seen as a benchmark on the state of the economy. Cruz said during a Tuesday interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that voters may justify the war’s consequences with a look toward the possible security benefits of an unarmed Iran.
The Trump administration has centered on the dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear program as its most important goal after months of inconsistent messaging.
“I don’t think national security decisions should be done based on short-term political considerations. I don’t think it’s gonna impact the midterms materially,” Cruz said. “I’ve seen no data that suggests this is having a big impact on the midterms.”
Voters, who have ranked the economy as one of their greatest concerns since the pandemic, can be unforgiving when their pocketbooks are shrunk. They sent President Donald Trump back to the White House after a couple years of high inflation under his predecessor, despite the current occupant’s role in the January 6th insurrection and his two impeachments.
Polling also shows the public remains unconvinced of Trump’s handling of the war. A little more than half of adults told the market research firm Ipsos last month that the conflict hadn’t been worth the costs.
