Multiple companies have slashed tech worker positions in the Bay Area, cutbacks that portend fresh waves of layoffs for the region’s technology sector, according to official filings with the state’s labor agency.
Walmart, Uber Technologies, Lucid, Lumileds, and Keywords Studios have all disclosed decisions to cut staffing levels in the Bay Area, separate WARN notices with the Employment Development Department show.
All told, about 700 tech jobs are being eliminated as a result of the latest disclosures filed with the state EDD by the respective companies.
Even with these ominous cutbacks in the works, the tech industry remains a key driver of economic growth in the Bay Area.
In May, the Bay Area gained 1,100 tech jobs, according to seasonally adjusted estimates provided by Beacon Economics. The industry added 1,200 jobs in the South Bay and 500 in the East Bay. Those gains were offset by a loss of 500 tech jobs in the San Francisco-San Mateo region and a decline of 100 in Marin County
The most recent tech sector job cuts affected workers in five Bay Area cities, according to some of the details in the WARN notices.
Walmart is cutting 394 jobs in the Bay Area, consisting of 306 positions in Sunnyvale and another 88 in San Bruno. The Walmart layoffs are scheduled to occur around Aug. 21. Walmart stated the lost jobs in the current round of layoffs are all tech roles and not in the company’s retail sites.
Lucid Group, an electric vehicle firm, is eliminating 136 jobs in Newark. These staffing reductions are due to take place Aug. 21.
Keywords Studios is slashing 128 jobs in San Francisco. The company’s layoffs are scheduled for Aug. 22. Keywords provides tech and creative services for the video game and entertainment industries.
Uber, a ride-hailing provider, is cutting 39 jobs in San Francisco, although that number could shrink. The company’s layoffs are anticipated to take place on Aug. 3. Uber said it’s possible 24 workers will be offered the chance to keep working with the company, which would affect the final layoff totals.
Lumileds, an advanced manufacturing company, is eliminating 11 jobs in San Jose, effective on Aug. 31. The company had previously signaled it would close the site where the job cuts are due to occur. A big data center is slated to be developed on the site where Lumileds has operated.
The respective companies all stated the staffing reductions would be permanent.
In its WARN letter, Walmart provided some of the rationale for its staffing cutbacks.
“Walmart is reshaping some teams in our global tech, product, and design organization to simplify how work is organized, reduce layers and complexity, speed up decision-making, and better align to business priorities and future growth,” Maren Waggoner, a Walmart senior vice president, stated in the WARN letter.
Hundreds of the Walmart tech workers who are being jolted by layoffs are located at a four-building office campus in Sunnyvale known as Moffett Green. Walmart could employ 3,600 at the tech hub.
Walmart indicated that some of the affected workers might retain their jobs.
“These changes include combining some teams, updating and expanding some roles, aligning certain roles to key locations and eliminating some roles,” Walmart stated in its WARN letter.
