New Delhi, June 16 (Reuters) – Apple’s supplier in India, Tata Electronics, said on Tuesday that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board dropped the oversight over the iPhone components manufacturing plant after the company addressed the pollution concerns.
The regional Tamil Nadu Pollution Control authorities had previously warned Tata of forced closure of the plant if the company did not explain why wastewater discharges found during government inspections had contaminated open wells on neighboring agricultural land, Reuters reported on Saturday.
On Tuesday, Tata told Reuters in a statement that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had confirmed that the company satisfactorily answered all questions raised in the notice and had ceased any further action on this matter.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Apple also did not respond to a request for comment.
Tata plays a key role in Apple’s efforts to diversify iPhone production outside China. The plant under scrutiny is located in Hosur, about 25 miles south of Bengaluru, and makes rear panels and other components for the iPhone.

Pollution-related warnings were among the many incidents affecting Apple’s supply chain in India. Other companies have also faced action from environmental authorities in India. In 2024 Mercedes-Benz tightened its management of water and air pollution at its only plant in the country after officials found shortcomings in compliance with environmental regulations.
The Tata Electronics situation underscores Apple’s focused efforts to diversify production and support a local supply chain in India. While the Hosur plant case was referred to regulators for resolution, questions about environmental accountability remain at the forefront for government bodies and investors.
The conclusion of investigations and the absence of further regulatory action allow Tata to continue production and focus on integrating a growing portfolio of iPhone components manufactured in India, according to analysts and sources close to the company.
