Actor Tamannaah Bhatia recently shared her thoughts on the differences between the Hindi film industry and South cinema in an interview with Forbes, offering a candid perspective on the expectations placed on actors, especially women.

The 36-year-old actor explained that the Hindi film industry allows more flexibility when it comes to choosing roles. According to her, actors in Bollywood can lean either towards performance-driven roles or commercial entertainers. “In the Hindi film industry, there are two kinds of actors. Those who have a more artistic take can stick to certain characters and may not necessarily do glamorous song and dance. It gives you the option to choose either path,” she said, adding that those who successfully balance both often achieve superstardom.

In contrast, Tamannaah pointed out that the South film industry expects actresses to excel in both aspects to sustain a long career. She noted that commercial viability plays a significant role, making it more restrictive in certain ways.
She also addressed the criticism surrounding the portrayal of women in South cinema, describing it as a “specific gaze” that can sometimes feel patriarchal and less flattering. However, she clarified that her comments were based on her personal experience within commercial cinema.

Tamannaah also spoke about dance numbers, defending them against the stigma often attached to “item songs.” She prefers to call them “party songs,” highlighting their entertainment value. Referring to stars like Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, she said such songs often outlive films and become cultural moments on their own.
