Suzlon has unveiled the S175 (5 MW), the company’s most powerful wind turbine to date and the tallest wind energy system developed for the Indian market. The launch follows the successful commissioning of the turbine at Vijayanagar, Karnataka, marking a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy journey.
Designed to support the next phase of wind power growth, the S175 has been developed specifically for Indian wind conditions and emerging energy requirements. The turbine is also positioned as India’s first FDRE-ready wind energy solution, enabling participation in firm and dispatchable renewable energy projects as well as hybrid and round-the-clock power applications.
The S175 incorporates a 175-meter rotor and a 160-meter hybrid lattice tower, reaching a blade tip height of 247.5 meters. This configuration allows the turbine to access stronger and more consistent wind resources, improving energy capture and overall project performance. Advanced aerodynamic design, carbon girder blade technology, and intelligent control systems further enhance operational efficiency and energy output.
The platform has been developed using insights gathered from Suzlon’s installed fleet of more than 15.5 GW across India. By combining proven reliability with next-generation engineering, the company aims to deliver stronger project economics and increased energy generation, particularly in low- and medium-wind regions.
Speaking at the launch, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said the new turbine represents a major advancement for India’s wind energy sector. He highlighted Suzlon’s contribution to renewable energy development over the past three decades and noted that the S175 will play an important role in helping India achieve its clean energy goals.
Girish Tanti, Executive Vice Chairman of Suzlon Group, said the turbine reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and market-specific engineering. He emphasized that the S175 has been designed to address India’s unique wind profiles, grid requirements, and operating conditions.
According to Mr Tanti, one of the turbine’s most significant advantages is its ability to unlock wind resources in locations that were previously considered commercially unviable. This capability is expected to expand the addressable market for wind energy projects while improving returns for developers and investors.
Suzlon currently operates as a comprehensive renewable energy solutions provider with businesses spanning wind technology, solar, storage, asset management, project development, and engineering services. With approximately 21.5 GW of installed wind capacity across 17 countries, the company continues to play a leading role in accelerating the global transition toward clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
