A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged as an adult after a shooting at the Haywood Mall on Haywood Road in Greenville, South Carolina, just after 1 p.m. on Saturday, according to officials.
In the latest statement from the Greenville Police Department, a spokesperson says the suspect in custody is 17-year-old Kamari Walker. He is being identified because he’s being charged as an adult, according to that statement.
The Greenville Police Department says Walker is facing multiple charges, but since he is a juvenile, the only publicized charge is Assault and Battery High and Aggravated. That is the charge that allows him to be charged as an adult, police say.
The statement says the charges stem from Walker firing his gun in the mall at another group of individuals who were also firing a gun.
The Greenville Police Department says officers are still attempting to identify the other party involved in the incident and asks anyone with videos or information to reach out to Detective Bryant at ebryant@greenvillesc.gov.
The Greenville Police Department said in a statement that officers heard gunshots coming from the plaza located between Macy’s and Belk, where they discovered two victims.
When officers arrived, they discovered a female bystander had sustained a gunshot wound to her foot, and a male victim had been shot in the neck and shoulder area.
Both have been hospitalized and are said to be in stable condition.
Officers say the people involved in the incident knew each other, and a verbal altercation led to the shooting.
Officers say they worked with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office to clear the mall after the shooting and set up a pick-up zone for drivers to retrieve their loved ones following the incident.
Authorities say several individuals were initially detained, and no other shots were fired after officers arrived at the scene.
Detectives say they are still working to identify the other individuals who discharged firearms, and a 17-year-old who was said to be involved is in custody.
No word yet on charges for those involved in the shooting.
Following the shooting, the mall remained closed Saturday evening and reopened on Sunday morning.
