The city of Struthers has a brand new fire chief and he’s coming out swinging. A former boxing champ and role model to his community Jacob Giuriceo found himself in and out of trouble back in his school days.
“I was always getting into fights in school,” Giuriceo said. I did grow up with a troubled past, I grew up without a dad, he died when I was a real young kid, I wanna say I was like five years old and a single mom raising three boys, I had two brothers kind of rough, we grew up in Youngstown rough area,” he said.
What he didn’t know is his path was leading him to something greater.

Thanks to a Campbell schools teacher, Giuriceo got into the “K.O. for Drugs” boxing tournaments.
“I fought in that, I wanna say fours years in a row. Won it all four years in a row and just kind of fell in love with the sport because it was something I was kind of doing as a kid kind of fighting and I just had that natural talent to fight I guess,” Giuriceo said.
Then he got into professional boxing in 2009 and fought on Kelly Pavlik’s undercard. His record is 20 wins, six losses and one draw. His final round was in 2017 right before he started working for the Struther’s fire department where he rose through the ranks.

“I had a work ethic in me that I feel like the Lord gave me just to keep working hard and always keep pushing towards and try to advance myself in anything I did,” Giuriceo said. “Bible says ‘In all ye eat, drink or do, do to the glory of God.’ So I try to do everything I do to honor him,” he said.
In so doing, Giuriceo has now become the new fire chief of Struthers. He was sworn in Friday.
“Was it ever my plan or my thought to become the fire chief, I would say no. As time progressed and I seen that hey maybe I could do this job, maybe I could do this to further better the fire department to better help the city of Struthers, to better help the citizens, it was just something that kind of I guess my whole life kind of molded me into it,” Giuriceo said.

Giuriceo adds, he wants to continue providing a service to Struthers by keeping them safe and that he’d also like to fight three more times to make his record an even 30, then retire from the sport for good.
According to a press release, Chief Giuriceo succeeds Fire Chief Mike Agnone, who is retiring after a “distinguished 35 year career dedicated to serving and protecting the residents of Struthers.”
