DRY MORNING; STORMY EVENING: Alabama’s weather will be generally rain-free this morning, but high resolution models continue to advertise an organized band of thunderstorms dropping southward through the state late this afternoon and tonight. SPC has defined a “slight risk” (level 2/5) over the northwest counties of the state, with a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) down into South Alabama.

Strong straight line winds are possible with these storms; with the ground saturated in many areas some trees could come down even with winds of 40-50 mph. Wind profiles do not support tornado formation; in fact we are officially out of tornado season. In Alabama it runs from November through May.
Ahead of the storms temperatures will rise into the 86-90 degree range, and the air will be unstable. Thunderstorms will likely enter the Tennessee Valley in the 5:00-7:00 time frame, then dropping southward while slowly weakening later tonight.
REST OF THE WEEK: Scattered showers/storms tomorrow will likely be confined to the south and southeast part of Alabama. Then, a dry, continental airmass will roll into the state tomorrow night. Wednesday will be sunny and less humid with highs in the upper 70s and low 80s. Most of Alabama will dip into the pleasant 50s early Thursday morning with a clear sky.
Global models suggest the weather will stay dry Thursday through the weekend with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. A very anomalous pattern for early summer; it is rare to find June afternoons without random, scattered showers and storms.
Showers will likely remain hard to find through at least the first half of next week with an upper ridge overhead.
