India suffered its worst humiliation when its men’s team crashed to a first time ever series defeat at the hands of Ireland in any form of cricket while its women’s team failed to even qualify for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup.
Sunday June 28 will go down in the annals of history as India were beaten by Ireland 2-0 in a T20 series in Belfast while Australia produced a stunner of a victory in their group stage match at the T20 World Cup at Lord’s, England to send India packing home as South Africa qualified for the semifinals.
Three of India’s iconic household names, Virat Kohli and his film star wife Anushka Sharma along with media pundit and former coach Ravi Shastri were at the venue hoping for their women’s team to successfully win the World Cup to add to their 2025 winning of the 50-over World Cup.
To add to the three celebrities, a record crowd of 27,000 people, mostly Indian supporters, witnessed the Australian pair of Elyse Perry (56) and Ashleigh Gardner (53 not out) associate in a 100-run stand for the fourth wicket from just 57 balls in pursuit of a 172 target while dismantling the opponents brick by brick to win the match with an over to spare.
It marked the biggest and highest run-chase in women’s T20 World Cups and the history makers Australia will now meet the West Indies while England will take on South Africa in the two semifinals.
Not far from where the Indian women were shattered, the men’s team with the likes of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and Shreyas Iyer were back in the pavilion with the total at 121 for 8 faced with a 155 target that Ireland successfully defended deploying some new faces.
Ireland who were without some of their regular players had never before beaten India in any format of the game. India for its part had a run of 16 series victories against all opposition and took on Ireland having won the T20 World Cup in 2026.
