QUINCY, Illinois – The City of Quincy could soon receive additional funding to help address eyesores around town as part of the Illinois Housing Development Authority’s effort to redevelop and beautify dilapidated homes across the state.
The city has already benefited from the program in the past, and is now hoping to do so for a third time through the Strong Communities Program. Quincy City Council members approved moving forward with the grant application process this week.
The program provides grants through the Rebuild Illinois capital budget to address vacant, abandoned and deteriorating properties. Funding can be used to clear or beautify those properties in an effort to increase property values and generate additional tax revenue.
The city received a $330,000 grant through the program in 2023, which was used for Quincy’s Fix or Flatten program.
Quincy Planning and Development Director Jason Parrott said the funding can also help address other housing issues currently facing the city.
“Because each time we take down one of these properties, our hope is that somebody will obtain it, and then go ahead and get a new home back, be it a rental, be it an owner-occupied home, anything that we can do because again that’s just another way of improving that area, improving that neighborhood when you remove the unsafe home and you get something new in its place,” Parrott said.
Parrott said the city plans to apply for the maximum grant amount of $750,000. Applications must be submitted by June 16.
It is unclear when the city will hear back on a decision.
