Wilmington’s own Aubrey Plaza and Hollywood legend Susan Sarandon co-star in the new film “The Accompanist,” which had its debut June 4 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
Plaza, who is also listed as a producer on the movie, and Sarandon appear alongside rising young actor Everly Carganilla. The film is the directorial debut for “The Office” actor Zach Woods.
Woods recently made a memorable comment about working with Plaza on the film: “It was like you poured kerosene on my ego” he said in an interview with E! News. The two have been friends for years, Woods told the publication, and last worked together in “Spin Me Round,” which was directed by Plaza’s late husband, Jeff Baena. Woods is best known as portraying Gabe on “The Office” and Jared on “Silicon Valley.”
Variety calls “The Accompanist” a family drama “centering on a 9-year-old girl (Carganilla) who is removed from her dementia-stricken grandfather’s care by a newbie child welfare agent (Plaza) and placed into the home of Sylvia (Sarandon), a kooky lady with a mysterious past that could unravel everything.”
No date has been set yet for a wider film release as “The Accompanist” is on the festival circuit.
Plaza, who is expecting her first child this fall with partner Christopher Abbott, has been busy lately, appearing in the finale of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and on the red carpet at the 2026 Tony Awards, where she showed off her belly. Abbott was nominated for his portrayal of Biff Loman in “Death of a Salesman.” While he did not win, the play, starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, took home six Tonys including for “Best Revival.”
At the Cannes Film Festival, it was announced that the Ursuline grad will star in Kenneth Lonergan’s “Tomorrow is a Drag,” a film co-starring Adam Driver, Vanessa Kirby and Matthew Broderick.
Plaza also made headlines earlier this year for the debut of her animated adult cartoon, “Kevin,” about a displaced cat. The show can be streamed on Amazon Video.
