Officers were responding to a report at 11:35 a.m. of shots fired and a gun protruding from an upper-floor window at a hotel in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood when they encountered a gunman on the ground and exchanged fire, Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher said at a news conference.
The fallen officer was identified as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, who had been with the service since 2021, police said in a statement late Monday.
“His demise is a great loss to our organization,” the service said. “His sense of duty, dedication and professionalism will always be remembered.”
Dagher described Benredouane as a public servant who “fell in order to fulfill his mission to protect and serve.”
Dagher said the shootout took place outside a Hilton. The video indicated that the location is the Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Midtown.
Cellphone video verified by NBC News shows someone in fatigues-style clothing appearing to exchange rounds with police. The video shows an officer tumbling on the ground, crawling in front of a parked car for cover and ultimately becoming fully prone.
Another officer nearby takes cover behind a planter as the sound of gunfire continues. An unarmed person comes up next to the officer, who turns toward the person; a gunshot is heard, and the person collapses, though it’s unclear from the video whether the officer shot the person or the person was caught in crossfire from the gunman.
Seconds later, the person in fatigues approaches the planter and appears to exchange fire with the officer, who moves away. The person appears to try to reload a rifle but collapses amid more gunfire.
A long gun was recovered from the scene, police said. The shooter was dead, police said.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers while on duty,” the service said in an earlier statement in French and English. “A female police officer and a civilian were also injured.”
Asked who killed the civilian, police said by email that they couldn’t comment “to avoid interfering with the process” and referred questions to Quebec’s police watchdog agency, known as the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, which is investigating officers’ response.
The watchdog agency said it was too early in the probe to comment.
Police earlier advised the public to avoid the area near Côte-des-Neiges, Highway 40 and Queen Mary. Those in the area were told to shelter in place; the alert was lifted shortly after 3 p.m.
Elevated video from the scene showed an officer and the suspect on the ground, with someone tending to the officer.
Video circulating online also showed officers responding to the scene with their guns drawn. Gunshots could be heard.
The identities of the suspect, the civilians and the wounded officer were unavailable. The injured officer was hospitalized in critical condition and was subsequently stabilized, Dagher said.
Christine Fréchette, the premier of Quebec, said she has requested that the president of the National Assembly lower the province’s flag to half-staff.
She thanked first responders, praised them for their courage, and asked the public to avoid speculation while an investigation was underway.
In a statement on X, Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the fallen officer and said she was closely following events in Côte-des-Neiges.
Representatives for Hilton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
