Adobe is going all-in on generative AI. After introducing generative fill to Photoshop in 2023, full image generation via Firefly in 2024, and Photoshop, Express, and Acrobat integration with ChatGPT in 2025, the brand announced Tuesday that it’s bringing an AI-powered photo editing tool to Photoshop. The beta version of the plainly-named AI Assistant lets users edit images via prompts on the web and within Photoshop’s mobile apps.
Photoshop’s AI Assistant uses Adobe’s Firefly generative AI models and Sensei automation to understand instructions like “remove the person in the background” or “make the colors more vivid,” then applies those changes, which can be manually edited later. Users can type or speak what they want to change, and the assistant can either apply the edit directly or guide them through the steps if they want to learn the workflow.
Adobe says the AI tool can handle tasks like removing elements from an image, changing backgrounds and lighting, and adjusting composition and aspect ratios. The company has also added an AI Markup tool in Photoshop on the web that lets users draw on specific regions of an image and attach a prompt, so edits stay focused on those regions, similar to Google Gemini.
Adobe Firefly, the brand’s dedicated AI image generator and editor trained on Adobe Stock and public domain content, also received a handful of prompt-powered editing features, like Generative Fill, Generative Remove, Generative Expand, and Generative Upscale.
Photoshop’s AI Assistant is currently in public beta on the web and in the Photoshop mobile app; desktop integration is still tied to Adobe’s testing and release plan. Paid users have access to unlimited AI photo edits through April 9, while free users are limited to 20 edits.
