India’s Unified Payments Interface or UPI has marked another major milestone globally with its launch in Greece. This expansion has been enabled through a partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited. A live demonstration held at Eurobank headquarters in Athens showcased how UPI enables instant, secure and seamless money transfers, with significantly lower transaction costs compared to conventional cross-border systems. Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias, Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait and Union Minister Piyush Goyal attended this presentation, highlighting the importance of this collaboration.Piyush Goyal, in a post on X, said he was delighted to witness the demonstration and emphasised that UPI’s growing global acceptance reflects trust in India’s digital ecosystem and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of technology-led growth.India has been expanding UPI globally through partnerships and MoUs with countries such as Singapore, UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan. With UPI now live in Greece, India continues to strengthen its position in the global digital payments space.
