OpenAI announced a major expansion of Codex, introducing role-specific plugins, interactive Sites, and annotations aimed at making the platform more useful for a broader range of professionals beyond software developers. The company said more than 5 million people now use Codex weekly, with non-developers, including analysts, marketers, operators, designers, researchers, investors, and bankers, accounting for about 20% of users and growing more than three times faster than developers.
The new release is designed to help teams integrate Codex into their existing workflows. OpenAI said organizations are already using Codex for tasks such as building internal applications, creating dashboards, preparing executive materials, developing creative assets, and accelerating research workflows.
One of the key additions is a suite of six role-specific plugins. These plugins package together relevant applications, workflows, skills, and instructions for specific professional functions. The initial launch includes plugins for data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, public equity investing, and investment banking. Together, the plugins support 62 popular applications and 110 skills.
The data analytics plugin enables business and analytics teams to explore product and business data, investigate changes in key metrics, and create reports and dashboards using platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks Genie, Hex, and Tableau. The creative production plugin helps marketing and creative teams generate campaign assets, ad variations, product imagery, and other visual content using tools including Figma, Canva, Shutterstock, Picsart, and Fal.
For sales organizations, the sales plugin provides access to customer context and account intelligence to help teams prepare for meetings, update records, build close plans, and identify at-risk deals using tools such as Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, Outreach, Clay, Rox, and Actively. The product design plugin helps teams transform concepts into prototypes, audit user experiences, and create interactive mockups that integrate with design tools.
OpenAI also introduced plugins for investment professionals. The public equity investing plugin enables users to review earnings, compare companies, monitor market signals, and evaluate investment theses using data sources including Moody’s, FactSet, LSEG, PitchBook, and Hebbia. The investment banking plugin helps bankers prepare pitch materials, analyze comparable transactions, and convert diligence findings into client-ready recommendations.
The company said additional plugins are planned for corporate finance, private equity investing, marketing strategy, strategy consulting, and legal workflows. OpenAI also intends to support an open ecosystem that will allow partners to build and distribute their own plugins through Codex and ChatGPT.
Another major feature announced is Sites, a new capability currently in preview for Business and Enterprise customers. Sites allow users to transform ideas, analyses, and plans into interactive web-based experiences that can be shared through a URL within an organization. OpenAI said users can create dashboards, project boards, review workspaces, planners, galleries, and lightweight applications that help teams collaborate and make decisions.
The company described Sites as a way to create living workspaces rather than static documents. Examples include customer review hubs, scenario planning tools built from financial models, product launch centers, project tracking dashboards, and repositories for creative briefs. OpenAI is also working with partners including Vercel, Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, Webflow, and Emergent as it develops a broader Sites ecosystem.
OpenAI additionally expanded annotations, a feature that allows users to select specific portions of generated content and request targeted changes. Previously focused on code and websites, annotations now support documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The feature is intended to help users refine content without rebuilding entire projects from scratch.
Role-specific plugins are rolling out in supported regions through the Codex plugin directory, while Sites are being introduced in preview for Business and Enterprise customers. Administrators can manage permissions and enable features through workspace settings.
