SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer is recovering after being shot during a deadly domestic violence incident that escalated into an hours-long SWAT standoff in a Stone Oak neighborhood on Friday.
The officer was wounded while responding to a call at a home on Red Hawk Ridge near Hardy Oak Boulevard, where police say a man forced his way into the residence and fatally shot his estranged wife before barricading himself inside.
According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, the suspect arrived at the home around noon and "shot his way through a door" before entering the residence.
As officers arrived on the scene, one officer was shot, prompting a massive law enforcement response. Approximately two dozen officers, including SWAT personnel, surrounded the home while negotiators and tactical teams worked to resolve the situation.
The wounded officer was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center and rushed into surgery.
"He was shot below the vest and above the belt," McManus said. "Fortunately, we understand right now that no vital organs were struck."
The officer, a seven-year veteran of the department, suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. His name has not been released.
Just before 3 p.m., officers fired multiple rounds of tear gas into the home in an effort to force the suspect out. Around 3:15 p.m., an armored SWAT vehicle was used to shatter an upstairs front window, clearing the way for tactical teams to enter.
A short time later, officers entered the home and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police also rescued the victim's two young children, who were inside the home during the ordeal. Neither child was injured.
The suspect's name has not been publicly identified, but McManus said they are looking into reports that the man may have had gang affiliations.
