MUMBAI: Class is in session, and viewers appear to be paying attention. Just two days after its launch, News18 India’s new prime-time programme Desh Ki Pathshala has emerged as the most-watched Hindi news stream on YouTube, delivering a commanding lead over competing news broadcasts.
The second episode of the show, hosted by Sushant Sinha, recorded an average concurrency of 231,000 viewers across all feeds, comfortably ahead of Aaj Tak’s 53,000, according to data from Databeings. The programme also achieved a peak concurrency of 386,000 viewers at around 9:45 pm, compared to 65,000 for its nearest rival.
On the primary YouTube feed alone, Desh Ki Pathshala maintained its dominance, registering an average concurrency of 224,000 viewers, nearly five times higher than Aaj Tak’s 45,000. Peak concurrency on the main feed reached 378,000 viewers, significantly ahead of Aaj Tak’s 57,000.
The strong performance follows a highly anticipated debut on June 16, which generated considerable buzz across digital platforms and among news audiences. The early numbers suggest that the programme’s format, which focuses on explaining complex issues and providing context beyond breaking headlines, is striking a chord with viewers.
Much of the show’s appeal appears to stem from Sushant Sinha’s established connection with audiences and his distinctive explanatory style. Positioned as “the nation’s classroom”, Desh Ki Pathshala seeks to simplify news developments and help viewers better understand the stories shaping public discourse.
The programme’s early success also reflects a broader trend in news consumption, where audiences are increasingly seeking formats that move beyond headline-driven coverage to offer deeper analysis, context and perspective.
As competition intensifies across television and digital news platforms, the strong opening performance gives News18 India an early advantage in the battle for prime-time digital audiences. Whether the momentum sustains over the coming weeks remains to be seen, but for now, Desh Ki Pathshala appears to have found its first lesson in success.
Desh Ki Pathshala airs daily at 8:50 pm on News18 India, Connected TV platforms and YouTube.
