Police confirm reported fire aboard ferry
More than two dozen passengers were evacuated from an MBTA ferry during an unscheduled stop at Castle Island on Monday afternoon after a fire aboard the vessel.
The Boston Police Department confirmed a fire was reported aboard the ferry at approximately 2:31 p.m.
MBTA spokesperson Lisa Battiston said the fire occurred within a machinery space on the vessel during the 2 p.m. trip from Hingham to Long Wharf in Boston with 25 passengers aboard.
“The flames were immediately extinguished as quickly as possible. There were no injuries. The cause is under investigation, which will be conducted by the US Coast Guard,” Battiston wrote.
Sky5 was overhead as people wearing orange life jackets disembarked from the MBTA ferry Champion on Castle Island. Fire Department vessels kept the ferry pinned against the shore while crews wearing safety gear appeared to work aboard the vessel.
Coast Guard, Quincy Police and tow vessels were also seen nearby. Multiple Boston and Massachusetts State Police vehicles were seen on the shore with their lights activated.
Champion is a 150-passenger, high-speed catamaran built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding. It was procured by the MBTA in 2018, according to STV, an engineering firm that worked on the project.
An MBTA bus was dispatched to Castle Island to bring passengers the rest of the way to Long Wharf, and Champion was towed away from Castle Island.
