SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners are hoping their bullpen will get a boost from within near the trade deadline.
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander on Tuesday said injured right-handers Matt Brash (right lat strain), Cooper Criswell (right pec strain) and Carlos Vargas (right lat strain) are each lining up to potentially return around the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Seattle Mariners’ rotation going back to piggyback – with a twist
Brash, who was placed on the injured list June 10 (retroactive to June 9), has a Grade 1 right lat strain. Hollander noted the injury is in a different spot than the right lat injury that kept him out for two weeks earlier this season. The plan is for Brash to undergo another MRI to reassess the injury three to four weeks from the point it occurred.
“It is not a re-injury. The first IL stint was sort of lower on his right side, more muscle related. This one is a little higher up and is a different type of strain,” Hollander said. “More showed up on the MRI this time, which is why the longer downtime.”
Brash has a 0.54 ERA with only one earned run allowed in 16 2/3 innings pitched over 20 appearances this season.
Criswell, who went on the IL June 9, has a Grade 1 to Grade 1-plus right pec strain. He will also have another MRI three to four weeks from the point of the injury.
Criswell has a 3.52 ERA in 30 2/3 innings over 26 outings this season.
Vargas, who has been out since spring training, recently began a throwing program.
“It’s been a really long road for Varg to get back at it,” Hollander said. “So he (is) looking a sort of a similar timeline to Brash at this stage, something around the trade deadline I think is reasonable. We’ll see how it progresses. Could be longer, could be shorter.”
Vargas’ 77 innings pitched were the second most among Mariners relievers last season. He had a 3.95 ERA in 70 appearances.
Hollander shared updates on several other injuries on Tuesday. Below is a look at each.
• The Mariners plan to give catcher Cal Raleigh more time off than usual in his return from a right oblique strain. Raleigh, who had been out since May 14, was activated from the IL Tuesday.
It’s “more about subjectively how he’s feeling and how he’s responding to sort of groups of games. I don’t think he’s gonna go out there and play 10 straight,” Hollander said.
• Utilityman Brendan Donovan (right groin muscle strain) is set to begin a running progression this week, which is expected to last 10 to 14 days, and could start a rehab assignment by late June or early July. Read more about the latest on Donovan here.
• The Mariners placed outfielder Randy Arozarena on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain (retroactive to Saturday) less than one hour before the first pitch of their series opener against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. Hollander, who spoke prior to the roster move, said Arozarena was set to undergo an MRI on his hamstring before the game.
Arozarena’s injury occurred when he tried to beat out a grounder against the Washington Nationals on Friday.
• First baseman Josh Naylor was out of the lineup on Tuesday night and is day to day with a wrist injury that cropped up during their recent road trip.
• Hollander said closer Andrés Muñoz is fine after leaving Sunday’s game against the Nationals with back tightness after facing just two batters.
Infielder Will Wilson (fractured left thumb) is being pulled off his rehab assignment. He will see a specialist to determine if he needs season-ending surgery.
The Mariners moved Wilson to the 60-day injured list Tuesday when Arozarena was placed on the IL, which opened up a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Curtis Washington Jr.
